A balcony greenhouse can help a Swiss household grow herbs for longer. That does not automatically make it a profitable urban-farming business. Balconies differ in wind, sun, load, building rules and access to water; customers travel, forget to ventilate and expect plants to behave like appliances. The opportunity lies less in selling a plastic box than in making a small growing system reliable in a specific home.

A credible business therefore begins with site diagnosis, suitable crops and service design. It avoids spectacular yield claims and focuses on outcomes customers can recognise: healthy herbs, fewer failed seedlings, simple maintenance and a structure that remains safe during wind and heat.

This guide explains how to validate a balcony micro-greenhouse offer in Switzerland, calculate the economics, select materials and plants, and distinguish a one-time product sale from a repeatable service.

Define the job before designing the greenhouse

Customers may want different things: fresh herbs for cooking, an educational family project, attractive greenery, early seedlings or a way to keep delicate plants alive. One enclosure cannot optimise all five. Choose a primary job and design the crop, dimensions, access and support around it.

“Year-round production” is usually the wrong promise for an unheated Swiss balcony. Winter light and temperature vary greatly, while overheating can become the larger risk in summer. A better offer extends shoulder seasons and protects selected crops, with honest seasonal limits.

Start with a balcony assessment

Use a standard assessment that records usable dimensions, orientation, hours of direct sun, shading from nearby buildings, wind exposure, railing and wall construction, drainage, water access, electrical access, child or pet risks and the customer’s ability to perform maintenance.

Ask the tenant or owner to check building rules and lease conditions. Fixing to façades, railings or waterproofing can require permission. A freestanding unit may reduce installation risk but still needs protection against tipping and wind.

Do not state a universal allowable load. Balcony capacity is a building-specific engineering question. Wet substrate, stored water, frames and people all add weight. Where load is uncertain, require confirmation from the owner, building manager or qualified professional.

Choose crops that forgive ordinary behaviour

The first customer does not need twenty varieties. Start with a small seasonal palette matched to light and temperature. Parsley, chives, mint in controlled containers and selected leafy greens can be more forgiving than heat-loving fruiting crops. Basil may perform well in warm conditions but reacts poorly to cold. Rosemary and thyme prefer different moisture conditions from many leafy herbs.

Group plants by water and light needs rather than culinary theme. Selling one “Mediterranean and salad” box may put dry-tolerant rosemary beside thirsty greens, creating a maintenance problem the customer is blamed for.

Be careful with invasive alien plants. Switzerland’s rules distinguish plants subject to handling prohibitions and those that may not be placed on the market. The federal restrictions also apply to potted plants on balconies and terraces. Maintain an approved plant list and review it when official annexes change.

The enclosure must manage heat, not merely retain it

A micro-greenhouse raises temperature by trapping solar energy. In spring that can accelerate growth; on a sunny day it can damage plants quickly. Ventilation is therefore a safety function for crops, not an accessory.

Design vents that work without constant app use. Passive or temperature-responsive opening can reduce dependence on connectivity. Screens may limit pests but also restrict airflow. Transparent materials age, scratch and lose clarity, so specify replacement and cleaning.

Condensation creates another problem. Persistent moisture can encourage fungal disease and damage nearby surfaces. Provide drainage that does not discharge onto neighbours or façades. A tray that holds runoff needs a safe emptying routine.

Water is the core service problem

Customers buy confidence that plants will survive a weekend away. A reservoir and simple irrigation can provide it, but the design needs a known operating range. Consumption changes with plant size, wind, sun and temperature.

Test the smallest and largest crop loads in realistic summer conditions. Mark a refill level clearly. Make blocked emitters visible and easy to clean. Avoid pumps that fail silently; if electricity is required, use suitable equipment and installation for the environment.

Sensors can warn about dry substrate, reservoir level or excess heat, but alerts must lead to an action. A notification at midday is useless if the customer cannot return home. Offer optional monitoring only after the passive system is stable.

Use substrate and inputs responsibly

Switzerland is working to reduce peat use because peat extraction damages carbon-rich habitats. The federal peat strategy includes horticulture, garden retail, vegetables and culinary herbs. Specify low-peat or peat-free substrates suited to the crop and watering system, then test them rather than treating “peat-free” as a sufficient performance specification.

Avoid routine pesticide bundles. The Federal Office for the Environment advises careful and sparing use of plant-protection products in home gardens. Prevention—healthy plants, airflow, hygiene, inspection and physical removal—should come first. Any product recommendation must match the permitted use and label.

Provide customers with a simple disposal and return guide for substrate, plant material, packaging, batteries and electronics. A durable frame with replaceable wear parts is more circular than an enclosure that becomes waste after one broken hinge.

Decide whether you sell equipment, service or produce

These are different businesses. A product seller earns at installation and carries product, warranty and inventory obligations. A service business earns from assessment, seasonal setup, maintenance and replacement plants. A produce seller enters food-law and hygiene responsibilities.

For most startups, service wrapped around a proven third-party or simple modular structure is safer than manufacturing custom hardware immediately. Customer visits reveal which features deserve product investment.

Price the difficult balcony, not the showroom example

Include assessment time, travel, carrying equipment through the building, assembly, anchoring, substrate, plants, cleanup, support, warranty visits and payment cost. A two-hour installation may consume five hours when logistics are counted.

Use a base package with explicit site assumptions and quote exceptions after assessment. Avoid one national fixed price if travel and building access vary significantly.

The figures are illustrative. Real supplier quotations, labour records and failure rates should replace them. If profit depends on finishing every installation in half the observed time, the model is not ready.

Make the warranty boundary fair

Separate defects in the structure or irrigation from living-plant outcomes. Plants respond to care and site conditions, yet blaming every failure on the customer will destroy trust. Offer a short establishment guarantee when the customer follows a simple care plan, and document exclusions such as ignored heat alerts or unauthorised modification.

Photograph the site and completed installation with permission. Give the customer operating instructions, maximum wind or weather precautions defined by the product, maintenance steps and emergency contact. State who removes the installation at lease end.

If herbs are sold as food, the business changes

Fresh herbs grown for personal household use are different from herbs harvested, packaged or marketed to others. Swiss food businesses are responsible for safe, hygienic and correctly described products, with cantonal authorities handling enforcement.

Before offering communal-harvest subscriptions or restaurant supply, clarify registration, self-control, hygiene, traceability and labelling with the competent cantonal authority. Do not make medicinal claims for culinary herbs. Food marketing cannot promise treatment or prevention of disease merely because a plant has a traditional reputation.

Run a building-level pilot

Geographic density improves economics. Ten installations across one neighbourhood are easier to assess and service than ten spread across Switzerland. Partner with a property manager or housing cooperative for a controlled pilot, but keep each resident’s consent and balcony assessment individual.

Choose three site types: sunny and sheltered, windy, and partly shaded. Instrument temperature and moisture during testing, while recording manual maintenance and plant survival. Do not market sensor readings as universal yield proof.

Track installation hours, support contacts, water refills, maximum temperatures, component failures, crop replacement and customer usage. Interview customers who stop using the system; abandonment often reveals more than enthusiastic early adopters.

Growth should reduce service friction

Standardise a small number of modules by balcony type. Use replaceable panels, common fasteners and documented parts. Train installers with a site-acceptance checklist and require escalation when anchoring or load is uncertain.

Create seasonal service routes by postcode. Offer remote advice only for problems a photograph or sensor can diagnose reliably. A subscription should finance genuine recurring work—plants, inspection, cleaning or winter preparation—not exist solely to make revenue look predictable.

Plan for winter before selling in spring

A seasonal shutdown is part of the product. Decide which plants remain, which move indoors and which are composted. Drain irrigation lines that could freeze, clean reservoirs, secure or remove panels exposed to snow and wind, and store electronic components according to their specifications. Give customers a dated checklist instead of expecting them to remember instructions from installation day.

Winter service can create useful recurring revenue, but price it from real labour and travel. A technician making a separate journey for every balcony will struggle to earn a margin. Cluster appointments by building or neighbourhood and let customers book from limited service windows.

Use customer data carefully

Connected sensors can reveal occupancy patterns as well as plant conditions. Collect only readings required for the service, explain who receives them and define retention. Do not reuse addresses, photographs or environmental data for marketing without a proper basis and transparent notice.

Customers should retain basic operation when the subscription or internet connection ends. A greenhouse that cannot ventilate or water safely because a cloud service is unavailable is a poor physical design. Provide a manual override, export relevant history and describe what happens when support ends.

Make environmental claims measurable

“Sustainable,” “local” and “zero waste” are not self-proving. State the concrete feature: peat-free substrate, replaceable panels, a repair service, reclaimed aluminium or plants sourced within a stated region. Keep supplier evidence and avoid claiming that a small balcony harvest replaces a household’s normal food supply unless measured data support it.

The defensible business is not the smallest greenhouse. It is the accumulated knowledge linking Swiss building conditions, crop plans and ordinary customer habits. If the company can say which system works on which balcony, install it safely and support it economically, the hardware becomes useful rather than aspirational.
